Frosty - Golden Retriever - Heartworms

This is a sad story...

This is just an update on a dog my wife and I rescued and tried to save his life.  And the story of what happens when you don't give your dogs the care they need.  Frosty did not make it and had to be put down today... His heartworms were just to bad and could not be treated.  And to think this was totally preventable.  My heart and prayers are with the couple who was fostering to adopted him.  This is a pic of what he looked like the day we picked him up.Frosty 1st Day intake

When we got Frosty, the day after New Years, Frosty was in VERY bad shape.  He only weighed about 48 pounds.  The vet told us he should be about 70-85 pounds when healthy.  He could hardly even stand up.  But he was a lap dog from the getgo.  He was a lover.

Buy the way he looked, he had been mistreated for a long time.  It looked like he was tied to a stake or to something for a long time.  He had a hard time walking.  He was just in bad shape.  We took him to the vet and he tested positive for heartworms.  His blood work was way off and he was in need of some TLC... The vet did not want to start the heart worm treatment until he reached about 85% of his target weight. He never made it.

I beg all of you to take care of your pets... Get them fixed and make sure you give them their heartworm meds on the SAME day each month...

Frosty, my prayers and thoughts are with you...

Please get involved with any rescue in your area, the one my wife and I are involved with is the Golden Beginnings Golden Retriever Rescue

It is such a shame that any animal has to go through this type of treatment.  Goldens are such great dogs and to know that someone let Frosty get to such a horrible state is sad.  At least now he gets a great chance to play fetch in a place where animals are loved all the time!

What a sad story!  I send myself Yahoo alerts by email to remind me of the dog meds.  So far so good.

Danny, This makes my heart bleed. Thanks you for doing your part in rescuing these precious animals. You will see Frosty again over the Rainbow Bridge..

I want to get involved in the find the a-holes that treat their pets like this group...I will probably never own a golden (wife is allergic) but my neighbor has one and she is a sweety.  Sheez, too sad but you did the best with a really unfortunate situation - we need more like you and your wife!

That's a sad story.  Golden Retrievers are such lovely dogs too.  We take care of our dog, Jake, a pointer to the point of really spoiling him.

Poor dear thing.  I'm so glad he had people to love him before he had to leave.  Yes heartworms are preventable, unfortunately for some people the medication is too expensive.

Frosty was a great dog who never had a chance prior to GBGRR, unfortunately it was too late for him.  Medical care and heartworm preventative can be expensive but if a pet owner can not afford the care there are rescue orgs that can place the pets in a home that can take care of them properly.

Heartworms are  a really bad and preventable issue.  People need to be responsible.

Unfortunately we live in an area where heartworms are prevalent so it's not a matter of if but when a dog will get heartworms without preventative medication. I have two GBGRR Goldens, both of which had heartworms when we were fostering them. Today they are both healthy, happy dogs and receive their medication once a month. My heart goes out to Lisa who was fostering Frosty to adopt.

Frosty is a handsome dog. It breaks m eart to hear about animals who end up with problems due to neglect. Our pets are our kids, and they have no controol ver the life they live. We have set up a website , www.petsleavepawprintsonyourhearts.com it is a non for profit that sponsors fundraisers for the community  spay and nuter prgram and humane society. Our big picture goal is to become a no kill humane society by responsabily reducing the number of pets inthe area to those that are loved wanted and cared for by there owners

I'm so sorry to hear of Frosty's short life.  It is not fair.  They are helpless creatures and they rely on us to do the right thing by them.  I am hopeful that you will be blessed with another rescue when you are ready.  You are doing a great thing...

We have rescued four dogs and at one time had five dogs living in the house.  It is very rewarding to save the life of an animal that we know would have been put down at the Animal Control Center.  They didn't ask to be brought into this world, and they deserve the best of everything.  I'm glad Frosty had you to care for her, and she finally knew that someone cared.

Poor guy.  I hate seeing photos like this but it is a good reminder that people must be diligent every day to properly care for their pets or find someone else who can.

So sorry to hear about Frosty.  At least he had some good times before he had to go.  What a shame!
